Artificial Intelligence tool for Chest X-ray Screening
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Health Research (DHR), and the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, have jointly developed an artificial intelligence tool, DeepCxR version 1.1, to be used as a chest X-ray screening tool.
This AI-powered solution has been designed as an advanced system for the screening and detection of abnormalities in chest X-ray images. It enables classification of chest X-rays as normal or abnormal and is capable of identifying clinically significant findings, including pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and other lung diseases, through a robust and reliable AI-driven methodology.
The tool is intended to support large-scale screening of high-risk populations by facilitating early identification of abnormal cases. These identified cases can subsequently be reviewed and confirmed by qualified medical experts, thereby strengthening the overall diagnostic and referral process.
As a cost-effective, scalable and AI-powered solution, DeepCxR is well suited for public health programs, hospitals and national TB elimination initiatives. In view of India’s high TB burden, the tool will be distributed free of cost under the National TB Elimination Program (NTEP), ensuring equitable access across healthcare facilities and communities nationwide.
